| Statement: NUMSA Supports Public Workers Strike |

18 August 2010 1. The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa) supports the decision by the public sector workers to go to a rolling mass action in demand of a living wage and improved conditions of employment. This public workers strike should be located and understood within the broader struggles waged by workers and poor for equal distribution of income at the point of production. 2. This public workers strike should also be about intensifying the fight against corruption and building a new public servant that is committed to quality service delivery for the working class and the poor. 3. As Numsa we call our revolutionary and peoples government to resolve this wage in impasse in line with its electoral commitments of creating decent work and sustainable livelihoods. 4. We are extremely worried that government is applying cheap political blackmail, especially to the teachers unions, as opposed to meeting public workers demands. 5. We believe that the current wage negotiations dispute could have been long resolved, and that in as much as teachers should teach, and public servants should serve the public, it will be unfair to expect them to do so with perfection without better wages. 6. We demand that our people's government considers the implications for the matriculants and ensure that they have the better service at the end of the day as they face their matric examinations. The failures by our people's government to avert this strike action will be a betrayal to the children of the working class, who are already suffering a result of escalating unemployment rate and cost of living.
