What is Happening to the Alliance? |

Much is at stake in the latest spat between Cosatu and the ANC. Disciplinary action as mooted by the National Working Committee of the ANC will threaten the Alliance says Vavi and a number of Cosatu affiliates that have come out in support of their general secretary. Whatever happens, and things are far from clear (leaks and counter-leaks make the water more than muddy,) the ANC is as divided as it was before the Polokwane conference. Masetla, a former Mbekite, now a Zumaite and definitely an anti-Vaviite and many of the nationalists in the ANC resent the regained influence of the SACP and Cosatu in the ANC.

8000 march in Cape Town against another Israeli atrocity |
About 8,000 people participated in a hastily organised march to protest the Israeli commando attack on a flotilla of ships carrying aid to Gaza. Organised by the Muslim Judicial Council and various Palestinian Solidarity organisations including the Palestinian Solidarity Group (PSG), the march peacefully made its way to Parliament where a memorandum was handed over by leaders of the protest march to the deputy Foreign Minister Sue van der Merwe.

Defend and Advance the Freedom of Expression for All! |
The Alternative Information Development Centre (AIDC) statement on the threats to Press Freedom notes that - as a result of ANC policy - South Africa's media is highly concentrated and services a small section of the population. It also highlights the need to defend the freedom of existing media and extend press freedom to the majority of South Africans. The statement concludes with a call to forge a media democracy movement.

Brief: Critical Thinking Forum in Johannesburg |

Ferial was one of a panel of four at the Amandla/AIDC and Mail/Guardian Critical Thinking Forum held on 11 August at the Atlas Studios in Johannesburg.
